The uterus is provided with a tissue as endometrium. When cells from this lining escape from the uterus and implant in other organs in the pelvic region, usually the fallopian tubes, uterine ligaments, or ovaries, they become a painful condition called endometriosis.

During the menstrual cycle, the wayward cells exactly as they would act if they are still in the uterus, first thickening and then bleeding menstruation begins.
